Another month means another featured artist on the blog! Women’s month has just started and everyone’s thinking of ways how to celebrate it. It is also a wonder since it’s fire prevention month which means safety is also a priority. This month’s featured artist hails from Bicol and she’s a wonderful and very talented illustrator. She’s none other than Ysha Morco.

March is women’s month as well as fire prevention month. This time, I choose to feature someone from my hometown and someone whose talent is really simply amazing. Honestly, I do not possess any talent when it comes to illustrations and drawings. I just admire my friends from afar, continue supporting them, and even encourage them to just continue doing what they’re doing. Well, as long as it makes them happy.
She has been one of the people I have been admiring online. I knew about her through a common friend, Christian. Now, this is about her, passion and even her craft.

What made you start with this craft?
I guess I was just naturally drawn to art at a very young age.

Did you have struggles in pursuing the craft?
I was lucky enough to have supportive parents when it comes to pursuing my career as an artist, so I didn’t have any problems in that regard. Hmm… I guess my biggest struggle was when I was still a student at uni.
There was that phase in my life where I really didn’t feel like I was good enough to be an artist. I instantly felt discouraged when I see a really beautiful piece created by a colleague or if I see another artist doing stuff that I can’t do.
It frustrated me but I’ve learned to just focus on what I can do and develop my own sense of style, and instead of competing with other artists, I just competed with myself every day. I am very critical of my own work and I aim at a very high standard. I think that’s important in developing as an artist.

The worst enemy to creativity is self doubt.

Top 3 favorite tools?
- I do digital mostly so I’d say my Wacom Graphics tablet.
- For traditional work, I like using the Pigma Micron Pens and the ever-reliable Prang Watercolors.
If you are to share your tips and tricks with newbies, what would those be?
PRACTICE YOUR CRAFT EVERYDAY.
I can’t stress this enough, there’s no shortcut to getting better. Newbies always want to know the easy way through but really, it’s always just hard work and a lot of heart. Learn the basics and fundamentals of your craft. Buy books, watch videos, observe other artists and study their work.
You can’t be a master without being an apprentice first. Always make sure that your work has an idea behind it. Sometimes even the simplest piece can make the biggest impact as long as it tells a story and it sparks a certain feeling.
Art is, after all, an expression.

I was always a huge fan of art although I myself am not very gifted for any creative work. Love her works and it makes me so happy to see such a young girl with such a talent. I will definitively follow her work in the future. Good job girl and keep it up! 😀
Wow, It’s always great to read something like this on your blog. I admire how she molded her crafts, she’s indeed an inspiration to many. Her parents must be very proud of her as they really support her more than 100%. I truly agree that molding your crafts should put into practice everyday. This was such an inspiring article. It’s refreshing to know that even someone so talented can occasionally suffer from a creative block! I love the Sylvia Plath quote on self doubt as well. It’s so true that you can’t ‘psyche yourself out’ or it’ll get even worse. I try and take a break and come back later if I’m struggling to write something or come up with ideas, but it’s not always easy to do!
