What’s for Dinner? + Uni-Pak Giveaway!

Uni-pak Mackerel

What do you usually eat for dinner? It’s my first time to eat mackerel for dinner. Gladly, Uni-Pak sent me some so I could try it, here’s the experience.

What’s for Dinner? + Uni-Pak Giveaway

Most of us would eat dinner after braving the nerve-wracking traffic inside crowded jeeps or buses. Yet sometimes, we even forget to eat because we feel weary and would just want to rest and recharge for the next tiresome day coming. We are lucky if we get home and there’s food already. Honestly, that’s the life I’ve been missing ever since I stayed in Manila for college. I miss the times that my mom or aunts would prepare food or buy me take outs and bring them home. Ah, those were the good times!

Now, it’s challenging if you live alone since you will be the one to do everything. Yet, it’s fun since you know that you can make it. That you are a strong and independent person.

So while I was casually doing work and studying in between, I got a knock on my door. It was the mailman; people from Uni-Pak sent me mackerel cans. Lucky for me, I have Sam’s brother who’s a culinary arts student. He helped me create a recipe with the mackerel.

Fun fact:

(Canned) Mackerels have soft bones so you don’t have to be scared that much of getting choked.

But of course, remember to exercise care and caution. Yet, always remember this:

Kaya basta Mackerel dapat tatak Unipak dahil hindi basta nakasanayan the best na yan!

Mackerel Guisado

Just like how we cook canned tuna, that’s what we did with the mackerel too. We did the usual scrambled egg with tuna or popularly known as tortang tuna.

Ingredients

  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, sliced or chopped
  • 1-2 Tbps of canola oil (or butter)
  • 1 can of Uni-Pak Mackerel

Directions

  • If you haven’t sliced the onion and garlic, slice them first. Then, put on a plate or bowl then set aside.
  • Open the can of mackerel.
  • Preheat the pan and add the oil.
  • Sauté the garlic first and then add the onion.
  • Next, add the mackerel.
  • Sauté for five (5) to 10 minutes.
  • Serve.

Alternate

  • Fry the mackerel first then set aside.
  • Sauté the garlic and onion.
  • Add the mackerel.
  • Sauté for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Serve.

We have leftover spicy ramen from snacks we ate during merienda. We decided to include it as a side dish. Tyrone did the plating and here’s how it looked.

Another look at the dish

Of course, I’ll be honest there were some challenged endured when we were preparing and cooking the dish. To enlighten you a bit, I’ll put on the likes and dislikes we encountered when we cooked the dish.

Likes and Dislikes

Likes Dislikes or Challenges
The fishbones were soft. It has that pungent smell.
Even from the can, you could eat it by just reheating through microwave oven. Cooking with the mackerel could also be tricky since you have to look for compatible recipes with it.
This is a healthy ingredient that is good for everyone in the family. When you’re frying, the oil could be like bullets.
